What Type of Fungus or Disease Does My Lawn Have?

Oklahoma’s climate and environmental conditions can make lawns susceptible to various fungal infections, especially during rainy spring or fall seasons. Many people don’t realize that their lawn is growing fungus until the disease has spread throughout the grass, which is why it’s important to keep an eye out for the common types of lawn fungus in our area:

Brown Patch

This fungus is most common in warm and humid weather, and it causes patches of brown or yellowish grass throughout the lawn. The patches are often circular or irregular-shaped with a dark outer ring. Grass blades along the patch’s edge look water-soaked and may be covered in lesions.

Dollar Spot

If your lawn has poor drainage or has been overwatered, you may run into this problem – especially during warmer months of the year. This fungal infection gets its name from the small, tan, and round spots it causes, which are about the size of a silver dollar. The affected patches of grass may have tiny reddish-brown lesions on the blades.

Powdery Mildew

As the name suggests, this fungal infection causes a white and powdery growth to cover the grass blades. It can make your entire lawn look grayish in color, and it’s most obvious first thing in the morning. This mildew thrives in cool and damp environments.

Fairy Ring

Though this sounds cute and whimsical, fairy ring is a fungal growth that often occurs in overwatered lawns. It causes circular rings of dark green or dead grass, often with mushrooms along the outer edge. These growths are most common in summertime when the weather is warm.

How to Prevent Fungus in Your Lawn

Preventing fungal infections in your lawn is essential for maintaining a healthy and lush turf – and, thankfully, a healthy lawn is more resistant to fungal growths. Here are some tips and best practices to help prevent fungal diseases in your lawn:

  • Mow your grass regularly
  • Routinely remove thatch and aerate the soil
  • Do not water your lawn each day
  • Ensure your soil drains properly
  • Apply fertilizer at least twice annually
  • Get professional lawn care

What to Do If You Have Lawn Fungus

Treating fungus in your lawn isn’t an easy task, especially with how resilient the growths often are. To start, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis so you can create an effective treatment plan. To identify these fungal infections accurately, you should closely examine the affected grass, looking for specific symptoms and considering recent weather conditions.

For a precise diagnosis and treatment recommendations, consider consulting a local lawn care professional. In addition to helping you identify the type of fungus in your lawn, they can also help you pinpoint underlying causes that are contributing to your turf’s health issues. The specialists can also help provide suitable solutions tailored to your specific needs.
