Throughout the spring months, the increase in rain and warmer weather make an increase in the prevalence of mosquitoes an inevitability. While these same conditions can give you a beautiful garden or lush landscape, it can be hard to enjoy them while worrying about these persistent pests. Here are 3 preventative mosquito tips to help you enjoy this spring season without worrying about mosquito-borne illnesses.
Remove Standing Water
To breed, mosquitoes only require around a half an inch of standing water. Unfortunately, this means that your home could have multiple breeding grounds that you may not even be aware exist. Check your gutters, flower pots, bird baths, swimming pools or any other areas that may potentially be pooling water and remove it to limit breeding locations around your home.
Use an Effective Repellant
If you are planning to spend time outdoors, it’s probably a good idea to invest in an effective mosquito repellant. The CDC has stated that the best protection from mosquitoes, ticks and fleas that are looking for a free meal is a repellant that uses DEET. It is important to note, however, that mosquitoes can still bite through thin clothing and you may need to apply it directly to your skin and clothing for the best protection.
Plan Your Activities
Mosquitoes are most active during the period between dusk and dawn. If you are planning an outdoor activity, completing it before this time period will cut down on the number of mosquitoes you experience but won’t limit them completely. For added protection, consider investing in spray treatments around your perimeter to make mosquitoes less likely to flourish.
