For many of us, when we see a cockroach or even think of one, we are repulsed. They are gross! This reaction is quite natural because cockroaches are often found in sewers and other unsanitary places where germs abound.
Another study showed that roaches in apartment buildings harbor an average of three different kinds of bacteria that cause illness to humans. (That’s three illnesses that you don’t want!)
Roaches become infected with pathogens in various ways, but often what happens is they pick up germs on their bristly legs and antennae, then ingest the germs when they use their mouths to clean their bodies. Yuck! Besides bacteria, cockroaches can carry a host of other pathogens, including viruses, fungi, protozoans, and several species of roundworms that can multiply in humans and cause illness.
Cockroaches spread germs to us through their excrement, or just by walking on food, dishes, and food preparation surfaces. Bacteria have been shown to stay alive in cockroach feces on food for up to 4 ½ years.
